BROADCAST: 7:00 PM MT; Sportsnet1 and Sportsnet360 (TV), Sportsnet 960 The FAN (radio)
SEASON SERIES: The Calgary Flames will be looking to bounce back from Wednesday's season opener in Edmonton, in which they dropped a 7-4 decision in the Oilers' inaugural game at Rogers Place. The Flames received goals from Alex Chiasson, Troy Brouwer, Michael Frolik, and Dennis Wideman while Brian Elliott made 21 saves on 27 shots. Patrick Maroon, Tyler Pittlick, Zack Kassian, Connor McDavid (2), Jesse Puljujarvi, and Jordan Eberle scored for Edmonton. Netminder Cam Talbot stopped 37 of the 41 shots the Flames sent his way. Friday's game will be the second of four games played between the two clubs this season.
OILERS TEAM SCOPE: The Oilers will be making a change on defence on Friday as Brandon Davidson suffered an upper body injury in Wednesday's game. There is no timeline for his return as head coach Todd McLellan told the Edmonton media that Davidson "will be out for awhile," after practice on Thursday. In response, Eric Gryba has been recalled from the American Hockey League's Bakersfield Condors. The 28-year-old rearguard has played 218 NHL games in his career, 53 of which came in Oilers' silks last season.
FLAMES TEAM SCOPE: Like the Oilers, the Flames could make changes on defence on Friday night. During their fast-paced 35-minute practice on Thursday, head coach Glen Gulutzan had Mark Giordano paired up with TJ Brodie, Dougie Hamilton skating alongside Jyrki Jokipakka and Dennis Wideman partnered up with Deryk Engelland. Gulutzan noted these pairings will likely be used in the home opener, meaning Nicklas Grossman and Brett Kulak are expected to be healthy scratches. Up front, Gulutzan ran the same lines he used in Edmonton on Wednesday, with Freddie Hamilton alternating with Chiasson on the fourth line. Elliott is slated to get the start in net.
