Calgary faces San Jose for the first time this season

SEASON SERIES: Thursday's game will be the first meeting between the Flames and Sharks this season. Calgary held a 2-2-0-1 record against San Jose last season. The Flames last beat the Sharks on Feb. 11, 2016, a 6-5 shootout victory. Mark Giordano led the Flames in scoring against the Sharks last season. The Flames captain scored one goal and added five assists in the five contests. Sharks Defenceman Brent Burns led San Jose in scoring against Calgary with two goals and five assists in five games.

FLAMES TEAM SCOPE: The Flames are coming off a 5-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday in which they held a 34-22 edge in shots. Michael Frolik scored his second shorthanded goal of the season, tied for the NHL lead in that category. Frolik, Mikael Backlund, and Johnny Gaudreau all share the team lead in scoring this season with seven points in 11 games. Troy Brouwer, Sam Bennett and Dougie Hamilton trail with 6 points each. Thursday's game will be the second of a two-game road swing for the Flames, who finish the stint in California with a Saturday date against the Los Angeles Kings and a Sunday tilt in Anaheim versus the Ducks.

SHARKS TEAM SCOPE: The Sharks fired 41 shots on goaltender Louis Domingue but dropped a 3-2 decision to the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday. Joe Pavelski leads the Sharks in scoring this season with 11 points in 10 games. Burns is tied for the lead in scoring among NHL defenceman with 10 points in 10 games this season. Goaltender Martin Jones has suited up in all but one game this season for the Sharks and has a 2.26 GAA and a .914 save percentage.
