The Calgary Flames take on the Edmonton Oilers in their 2016-17 season opener

SEASON SERIES: The Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers will face off in the inaugural regular season game at Rogers Place, with game time set for 8:00 PM MT. The two met twice in the pre-season, with the Oilers taking both of the split squad contests by scores of 4-2 (in Edmonton) and 2-1 (in Calgary). In 2015-16, the Flames went 3-1-1 in a five-game season series against the Oilers, outscoring their divisional rivals 18-14 and picked up a decisive 5-0 win in their final visit to Rexall Place on Apr. 2, 2016.

FLAMES TEAM SCOPE: The Flames announced their opening day roster on Tuesday afternoon, going with 13 forwards, eight defencemen and two goalies to start the year. Veteran Nicklas Grossman, who signed a one-year deal with the team on Tuesday, and 22-year-old Brett Kulak were the final two blueliners to land a spot on the opening roster. The Flames also signed forward Kris Versteeg on Tuesday, who has spent the last month at the Oilers training camp on a professional try-out agreement. He is expected to be in the lineup on Wednesday night. 18-year-old Matthew Tkachuk is also expected to play this evening after landing a earning a roster spot. The sixth overall selection in this year's draft scored two goals and one shootout goal in the pre-season. In net, Calgary is expected to give Brian Elliott the nod. The goaltender, who was acquired from the St. Louis Blues at the 2016 NHL Draft, 23-8-6 with a 2.07 GAA and a .930 save percentage last season.

OILERS TEAM SCOPE: Like the Flames, the Oilers will have their 2016 first round pick in the lineup to open the season with fourth overall selection Jesse Puljujarvi being named to their initial roster. The winger posted 13 goals and 28 points in 50 games with Karpat in Finland's Liiga league. He joins a youthful forward crew that includes new captain Connor McDavid, Anton Slepyshev, Leon Draisaitl, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Others making their Oilers regular season debuts are forward Milan Lucic and defencemen Adam Larsson and former Flame Kris Russell. Cam Talbot is the Oilers expected starter.
