Playing against an old friend

by Torie Peterson / Calgary Flames

BUFFALO, NY -- There is no way around it: seeing blueliner Robyn Regher in a Buffalo Sabres jersey will be an extremely odd sight for the Calgary Flames, the coaching staff and fans alike.

The veteran defenceman played 11 seasons with the Flames before being traded to the Buffalo Sabres this summer and was key component on the club's backend during his time in Calgary.

"It's definitely going to different playing against him," Jarome Iginla acknowledged after the Flames pre-game meeting in Buffalo. "We played together for a long time."

The benefit for the Flames coming into this matchup is that they know exactly what they are facing when it comes to Regehr. There will not be any surprises from the former Flame, perhaps making it slightly easier to make decisions when he is on the ice.

"We know how hard of a competitor is," Iginla said. "There's a few things you stay away from because he can make the game pretty hard on you."

Olli Jokinen has played against the blueliner in his career but acknowledged it would be "weird" to see Regehr sporting a blue jersey tonight. However, he insisted his team needs to view Regehr as just another member of an opposition team if they want to be successful.

"It's no different than any other defenceman in the League. We just have to get ready, get the two points and move to the next city."

Head coach Brent Sutter agreed with Jokinen's statement but doesn't feel his team has put a lot of importance on squaring off against the familiar face.

"I think it's more the individual than it is the team," Sutter said. "Our focus is about our team game and what we need to do. How we need to play. For Robyn, it's probably a little different in the sense where he's having to play against his teammates in a jersey he wore for a numerous amount of years."

In 11 games with the Sabres this year, Regehr is pointless with a minus-two rating. He is currently paired with Tyler Myers.
