Morning Skate Report: Flames vs. Kings

by Jeff Clemens / Calgary Flames

The Flames have had a tough season of injuries this year and slowly they’re starting to get back to full strength.

Strong defenceman Cory Sarich has been out after suffering an upper body injury against the Colorado Avalanche. Missing four games, including tonight, Sarich is hoping to get back into the game for Friday against Colorado.

“I don’t think I’ll be going tonight but I felt really good today, today was the best I felt and I’m hoping that Friday I can get into action,” said Sarich.

“I thought I might be ready for last game but I just wasn’t there and things didn’t go very well but I felt great today so hopefully that continues over the next few days.”

With injuries hurting the Flames all season it’s at critical times like this that it will be key to have all the players return. While he would like to return sooner Sarich wants to be back up to top condition before returning to the ice.

“I felt good physically and mentally skating on my own but once you introduce 20 other guys it just felt a bit slowed down,” said Sarich.

“I just knew I wasn’t right and I’m not going to go out there and jeopardize our team, its big games right now and I need to be at the top of my game to get back in there.”

Many players have needed to step in and step up their play in order for the Flames to be successful this season.

One of those players who has stepped up his game, especially in recent games, is defenceman Anton Babchuk.

“Babs struggled early and then he got injured and he’s come back,” said head coach Brent Sutter

“It was hard to get him back in the lineup but once he’s got in now, he’s settled in and he’s been really good for us.”

Scoring four points in his last four games, Babchuk has been a great contributor to this team at the most important part of the season.

“I’m excited to play right now and still fight for the playoffs, every game is like a game 7 for us,” said Babchuk.

“We cannot lose; we have to win every game now. For me I just try to do my best every night.”

With all the players stepping their game up to the highest level this game against the Kings is sure to see some breakout performances.
