Morning Skate Report: Flames vs. Habs

by Torie Peterson / Calgary Flames

The rash of injuries suffered by Flames forwards in recent days has afforded Matt Stajan the chance to play on the top line with Alex Tanguay and Jarome Iginla.

However, when asked about his new linemates, Stajan stated he wasn't focused on who he was playing with. His mind is simply on helping his team get two points and climb up the Western Conference standings.

"I think we're just trying to win a hockey game here and move on," the pivot said. "Obviously we have a ton of injuries and we need guys to step. It doesn't matter who you're playing with. You've got to a do a job.

"For myself, I just can't change the way I've been playing. I've got to keep working hard and do the little things. I know the guys who I'm playing with tonight will get some scoring chances and we've got to contribute."

Given the increase in minutes and the situations he'll be put in, one may assume Stajan feels a ton of pressure heading into tonight's clash with the Habs. The man himself shrugged off that notion, saying it was a great opportunity.

"You embrace it. This is the fun part of the year. You're driving for playoffs. We need the two points. We're going to be a desperate hockey club. Obviously you don't control who you're playing with but you can control what you do out there. I've got to focus on my game, do what I need to do. Hopefully we find some chemistry here early in the game."

With Lance Bouma, Blake Comeau and Mike Cammalleri all sidelined with upper body maladies, the Flames recalled Krys Kolanos, Greg Nemisz and Guillaume Desbiens from the Abbotsford Heat on Monday.

All three have been recalled by the Flames earlier in the season and they are reveling in the chance to once again play with the big club.

"It's the best time of year to play hockey," Kolanos smiled. "It's the most exciting, for sure."

Desbiens and Nemisz both played two games with Calgary while Kolanos was in town for 10 outings and collected his first point in Flames silks during that span. While he was happy with his overall performance during his first call-up, there were a few aspects of his game he felt needed work. After being assigned to the Heat, he worked on improving those details and feels he is better prepared to help the team now.

"When I was here before, I was to find a niche in that kind of third, fourth line role but wherever they need me, I'll be ready."

The trio will play on the forth line tonight with Desbiens and Nemisz flanking Kolanos. All three are very comfortable with this situation as they are extremely familiar with each others style of play.

"You play with these guys all year and you know them," Nemisz said. "It definitely makes it a little easier.

"There's no time for us to feel it out. We've all been up here this year already. We're going to go out there and we've got to play our game."

Stajan needs 1 goal for 100.

Tom Kostopoulos will play in his 600th NHL game tonight.

Mark Giordano needs 9 assists for 100.

Scott Hannan needs 4 points for 200.

Tanguay needs 9 assists for 500.
