Morning Skate Report: Flames vs. Blues

by Torie Peterson / Calgary Flames

The usual frenzy surrounding the NHL trade deadline may have the media clamoring around their Blackberry's but within the Flames locker room, it is just another day at the office.

"You try not to think about it," Scott Hannan said with a shrug. "You can't control the situation so the best you can do is just prepare for the game tonight.

"It's a big game for our hockey club. We've got to come out and play better than we have over this homestand."

Hannan's fellow veteran Olli Jokinen echoed those statements, adding as a player gets older, the trade deadline becomes less of a nerve-wracking experience.

"When you come to the rink in the morning, you've got to start preparing for practice.

"You can't worry about things you can't control."

While some players pay close attention to the trades, Jokinen isn't that interested in being glued to the television for breaking news. However, he did make sure to get a good-natured jab in at TSN reporter Jermain Franklin when asked about how much he follows trade deadline transactions.

"I heard Jermain might go to TSN 2," he grinned. "That's the only scoop I heard."

Over the last three games, the Flames top line hasn't been performing at the level they were in recent months. They admitted they needed to be better if the team hopes to get back into the playoff picture.

"We've been minus-five as a line," Jokinen said. "We have a great responsibility over here. We play against other teams best players. A lot of times these games come down to whose best players are better."

Jarome Iginla added the trio needs to ramp up their intensity level and out-work the opposition. Jokinen concurred with the captain's statements before noting they have to play a more responsible game.

"The big thing for our line is that we've got to play better in our zone - then we spend more time in the offensive zone.

"It's a good challenge for our leadership group as well. We believe we have guys here that we can get into the playoffs (with). It's up to us now to get it done."

Matt Stajan needs 1 goal for 100.

Jay Bouwmeester needs 3 games for 700.

Mike Cammalleri needs 9 goals for 200.

Mark Giordano needs 10 assists for 100.

Scott Hannan needs 5 points for 200.
