Mark & Lauren Giordano launch charitable school initiative

by Staff Writer / Calgary Flames

CALGARY, AB -- Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano and wife Lauren are proud to announce a new exciting charitable initiative Team Giordano - Points to the Future.

Team Giordano will work with Calgary Board of Education (CBE) to provide additional resources and select the schools to ensure every student in every Team Giordano school has their needs met with help from one of the key sponsors of the program, Supreme Basics. The program will donate $100,000 to three Calgary schools that the CBE has identified. These schools will be supported in areas such as:

•Literacy and Technology resources for the schools

•Comprehensive school health supports

•Student activity support

•Athletic and winter clothing

•Physical education equipment

•Positive well-being supports

“My wife Lauren and I wanted to establish a program that would ensure all students who participate are offered the support and encouragement we received from our parents, teachers, teammates and coaches when we were younger,” says Mark Giordano. “We wanted to support schools and we wanted to support education. We are hoping this donation will help both in these areas.”

The $100,000 donation was funded by donations from the Calgary Italian Open with Mark Giordano, Mark and Lauren Giordano and the Flames Foundation for Life.

As a way to help students create and achieve goals every student who is part of Team Giordano will be given the opportunity to complete a Gio’s Journal developed in partnership with Supreme Basics. These journals will be designed to help measure and monitor progress and record their Points to the Future. Points the children will earn by doing the things in the classroom, around the school and in their community that will lead to them acquiring the skills essential to succeed in life. The Team Giordano program is aimed at promoting and rewarding physical fitness and academics, healthy lifestyles, leadership development, community involvement and positive behavior. Journals and t-shirts for students at the three schools will be provided for the program by Supreme Basics.

All students from the three Calgary schools that received the funding will be in attendance at the Calgary Flames practice on Tuesday, October 7th at 10:30 AM.
