Joe Pavelski scored at 7:47 of the first period with Michael Raffl adding a late empty-netter with 1:09 left.
Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger got the shutout with 29 stops, while Jacob Markstrom turned aside 22.
The series now shifts south to Texas for Game 3 Saturday night.
Johnny Gaudreau appeared to open the scoring 43 seconds in when he was sprung on a breakaway, but the the play was whistled offside.
The problem? It was so loud in the building - the raucous C of Red at full volume - that No. 13 didn't hear it and walked it and roofed one by Oettinger.
That drew a crowd out by the right-wing boards, with Matthew Tkachuk mixing it up with John Klingberg and some punches thrown, both being sent off for roughing.
A turnover in the Flames zone led to the actual first goal of the game when Pavelski tipped a wrister from the point by Jason Robertson up high past Markstrom at 7:47.
Mikael Backlund and Andrew Mangiapane had a pair of 2-on-1s early in the second period but Oettinger came up with big stops on both, and then stopped rebounds attempts on both.
The Flames went on a 6-0 run of shots to start the middle stanza before the Stars got their first on a powerplay.
In a relatively tight low-event game after 40 minutes, the Flames outshot the Stars in the third with a handful of chances but couldn't beat Oettinger.
