Des Moines, IA – The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights strengthened their hold on first place in the West Division, getting a goal from Dustin Boyd in the third period to beat the Iowa Stars 2-1 at Wells Fargo Arena. It was the Knights’ second win in as many games against the previously unbeaten Stars.
The Stars got a goal from a recent recall to forge ahead 1-0. Jared Nightingale, just called up from the ECHL, fired a wrist shot from the right point that beat a screened Brent Krahn at 7:54.
The Knights answered back less than four minutes later. They worked a terrific tic-tac-toe play. Kris Chucko fed David Van der Gulik who slipped the puck to Warren Peters for an easy tap-in at 11:53.
The two teams played a scoreless second period. Each team had eight shots on goal.
The deadlock was finally broken nearly halfway through the third period. Dave Moss forced a turnover just outside the Iowa blueline and fed Boyd. He beat goalie Tobias Stephan with a sharp wrist shot for his fourth goal of the season.
Krahn was tested with ten shots in the third period but stopped them all to earn his fourth straight win.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights are now 7-0-1-0 and winners of a franchise record seven in a row. They lead the Stars by three point in the West Division standings. Iowa is now 6-2-0-0.
