The ovation that newcomers Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar got when they were announced as part of the starting lineup Sunday evening at the Scotiabank Saddledome was loud.
The only thing louderon the night? When Huberdeau scored his first goal as a Flame in the second period.

Huberdeau - acquired along with Weegar as part of a trade with the Panthers for Matthew Tkachuk - finished last season with 115 points and is one of the premier players in the NHL.
His skill, poise and puck-handling prowess were on display right from the opening faceoff against the visiting Canucks, where he played up front with Elias Lindholm at centre and Tyler Toffoli on the other wing.
With 3:11 gone in the middle stanza and the Flames on the powerplay, Huberdeau set up shop beside the net, took a pass from Noah Hanifin and calmly fired a pass attempt between his legs that was blocked and wound up back on his stick, and he snapped it past Collin Delia.
He was named the game's first star.
Cody Eakin - in camp on a PTO - Blake Coleman and Brett Sutter also scored in a 4-0 victory. Dan Vladar played the first two periods and made 15 saves. Oscar Dansk played the third, finishing with four stops.
The tilt was part of a pair of split-squad games, the clubs also meeting on the left coast with the first puck drop an hour earlier. Calgary picked up another W in that one thanks to Michael Stone's overtime winner.

Vladar made a big stop 2:06 into the tilt in Calgary but Colton Poolman was sent off for interference right after the save.
Nothing doin' for the Canucks.
The Flames went to the PP at 5:37 when Nils Hoglander was whistled for roughing Rasmus Andersson along the halfboards in the Canucks zone.
Huberdeau, Lindholm, Toffoli, Andersson and Hanifin started the man-up but nothing doin' for the Flames, either, when the two minutes was up.
They got another crack, though, not long after at 8:01 when Chase Wouters was sent off for holding on Dillon Dube. Backlund had the best look but Delia got a piece of his rising wrister with his blocker.
Dube - who won the the title of Fittest Flame for the second year in a row - had a shorthanded partial breakaway chance later in the frame but had the puck knocked off his stick in tight right on the doorstep with Travis Dermott draped on his back.
In total, there were five penalties in the first period (three to Calgary, two to Vancouver). It was theme on the night with 12 minors called in total. The shots were 9-6 for the Canucks after 20 minutes but it was all Flames after that.
Huberdeau opened the scoring in the second and 1:53 later, Eakin made it 2-0. Backlund caused Danila Klimovich to cough the puck up just inside the Canucks blueline, getting a shot on net that Delia saved but the rebound was swatted towards the cage by young defenceman Jeremie Poirier, Eakin then tipping it across the line for good measure.

Coleman stepped into a slapshot off a pass from Backlund on another Calgary powerplay, making it 3-0 at 11:57.

Vladar stood tall later in the period with a stellar stop on a breakaway by Arshdeep Bains, then came across to stone Klimovich's back-door tip attempt.
He was one of the best Flames on the night.
Sutter finished it off with powerplay goal with 13 seconds left in the game.
