Calgary Flames prospect Johnny Gaudreau is one of the ten 2013 Hobey Baker finalists after putting together a career season in his sophomore year at Boston College.
The 19 year-old from Carneys Point, NJ leads the Eagles in scoring with 51 points (21 goals, 30 assists) in 35 games this season and leads the nation with a 1.46 points-per-game average.
Last week, Gaudreau was named Player of the Year and was named to the All-Conference first team at the Hockey East annual awards banquet. He is just the fourth underclassman in league history to be named Player of the Year, joining Brian Leetch, Paul Kariya and current Boston College associate head coach Greg Brown.
BC Interruption, a blog covering Boston College sports teams, began campaigning for Gaudreau for the Hobey Baker early in the season with Gaudreaubey Baker t-shirts sold on their website.
"Gaudreau was already a quick fan favorite after a torrid freshman year, but his filthy goal in the national championship last year to put the game away immediately brought him up to legend status," Grant Salzano, a BC Interruption contributor, told CalgaryFlames.com. "I figured well, he has the hype, he's got the skills ... it just seemed that the seeds had been sewn for a possible Hobey run. I thought if we put out shirts and kick-started the early season hype it might maybe improve his chances, even just a little bit. So I took the nickname 'Gaudreaubey Baker' that we had been throwing around, threw it on a t-shirt, and we put it up on the blog.
"The response has been awesome."
Salzano and BC Interruption took it one step further later on in the season when they added a Johnny Hockey t-shirt into the mix. The idea stemmed from the Johnny Manziel-Heisman Trophy campaign and hearing Johnny Hockey being used on a regular basis in television coverage of the 2013 World Junior Championships.
"We figured it made sense to put out a new shirt to keep the hype going as deep into the season as possible so that Johnny Gaudreau's name would be on the minds of everyone -- especially, of course, the Hobey voters.
"Plus, the Gaudreau hype really spiked during World Juniors when it wasn't just people with an NCAA hockey focus who knew what he was doing. I thought the Johnny Hockey shirts would give those who didn't really care about the NCAA's Hobey Baker Award a chance to still show off their support for the NHL's Next Big Thing."
All proceeds from both t-shirts go to the Boston College Campus School, an organization that educates students with multiple disabilities.
The three finalists will be named on Wednesday, Apr. 3. The Hobey Baker Award announcement will come on Friday, Apr. 12 at 8 PM MT from Pittsburgh, PA, the site of this year's NCAA Frozen Four Championship.
