Flames fail to find offence in loss to Kings

Elliott turned aside 34 shots as Calgary blanked 5-0 by Los Angeles

by Aaron Vickers @AAVickers /

LOS ANGELES, CA -- Devin Setoguchi had two goals, and Peter Budaj stopped all 24 shots to help the Los Angeles Kings to a 5-0 win against the Calgary Flames at Staples Center on Saturday.
Jeff Carter, Kyle Clifford and Trevor Lewis also scored for the Kings.
Brian Elliott made 34 saves for the Flames, who are 1-2-0 to start a four-game road trip.
"I guess we didn't measure up too well," Elliott said. "It's not the way I want to play and I don't think anybody in our room can say they played the way they wanted to play, either. Individually and as a team, as a group, we need to be a lot better."

Flames open up road swing with loss to Chicago

Calgary out-shot Chicago 34-22 but fell 5-1

by Aaron Vickers @AAVickers /

CHICAGO, IL -- Corey Crawford made 33 saves and Patrick Kane had a goal and two assists to help the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-1 win against the Calgary Flames at United Center on Tuesday.
Artem Anisimov, Tyler Motte, Artemi Panarin and Niklas Hjalmarsson also scored for the Blackhawks.
Michael Frolik scored for the Flames, who have lost back-to-back games to follow a three-game winning streak.
"I thought we were more than with them in the first two periods," Calgary coach Glen Gulutzan said. "I thought we were the better team through two. They have a couple great players who made some great plays. Even in the third, until we took the penalty and they got ahead, we were in control of our game. It just didn't go our way and it exploded in the end. It wasn't a 5-1 game in my mind."

Flames' lament slow start in setback to Caps

Calgary surrendered two goals in first half of opening period against Washington

by George Johnson @GeorgejohnsonCH /

CALGARY, AB -- The polygraph doesn't lie.

And the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, is:

Courageous, determined. But not quite at that 'there' yet.

"Disappointed,'' murmured centre Mikael Backlund. "That's how I feel. Just ... disappointed.

"I think we've got more in us.

"We had a good push in the third, but over 60 minutes it wasn't good enough.

Flames finish homestand with setback to Capitals

Backlund scores, Elliott makes 26 saves in loss

by George Johnson @GeorgejohnsonCH /

CALGARY, AB -- As his Calgary Flames readied to put their three-game win streak on the line, coach Glen Gulutzan wasn't shy in the morning about the importance he was placing on the performance against a formidable foe.

A "growth game", he called it.

A litmus test, of a sort.

Well, taken in, they passed the exam but lost the game anyway.

But off the tenacity and committed to the game plan displayed against the reigning President's Trophy-winners, they're not that far away, with a four-game road swing through Chicago and the California teams upcoming on the docket over the next week.

Dennis Wideman, Deryk Engelland and Johnny Gaudreau also scored for the Flames, who have back-to-back wins to sweep a two-game road trip after starting the season with one victory in six games.
"I've said right from the beginning, I don't question their will to win," Calgary coach Glen Gulutzan said. "I don't question their want to win. But the manner in which we were going about it wasn't the right way. We're trying to get that straightened out. These are two good steps. This is a great locker room. This is a good group of guys. They care.

"It was good," said Elliott, who was acquired by Calgary from the St. Louis Blues in the summer. "I definitely wanted that one. Everyone (did) for that matter. We haven't been playing like we've wanted to. The guys came out and had a heck of an effort. I just wanted to stop as many as I could back there."

Calgary trailed 5-2 in the third period and scored a pair of goals to get them to within one strike, but couldn't complete the comeback.
