Friends win Pick 'N Win contest

When Flames fan Jeff Schauff found out he snagged the grand prize for the Flames Pick 'N Win Contest, he was shocked. He was amazed he pulled it off and was a wreck watching the final game of the 2005-06 regular season.

Schauff, who won the second half of the season with 785 points, wasn't the only one who walked away a winner though. Coincidently, his friend Sean Bailly, who originally told Schauff about the game, won the first half of the season with 650 points.

But it wasn't exactly what you would call luck of the draw, according to Schauff, it was all strategy.

"It was a lot of math, a little luck and a little bit of hockey sense, or at least I like to think so," joked Schauff.

"For the most part it was a lot of number crunching and looking at which stuff I believed would do best over time and not bouncing from game to game."

But what was his strategy? Well according to the 25-year old, who just recently completed his Bachelor of Political Science, he stuck to a formula when Calgary was at home and for the most part, he was successful.

"Calgary plays a lot of one goal games, so all my picks in a victory were either Calgary or opponent by one and always Calgary at home by one," added Schauff.

Schauff, who was first introduced to the Flames Pick 'N Win in late November, followed the same game plan Bailly did, but made some minor tweaks to make the formula his own.

"I spent December figuring out what my formula would be for the second half and off to the races I went," said Schauff, who's never even participated in a hockey pool before.

"He (Bailly) had a white board in his basement with all the categories charted for how frequent everything occurred, and I just offered my two cents on his picks."

Schauff won a signed Jarome Iginla jersey courtesy of and a 42-inch Panasonic Plasma TV from Bestway Television and Appliance.

Friend Bailly won an autographed Miikka Kiprusoff jersey and a Sony 51 inch big screen TV and home theatre system from Bestway

"I was dumbfounded in shock. I knew that I had mathematically clinched it," said Schauff.

"When that final buzzer went, it was a great rush."

Thousands of Flames fans played Pick and Win throughout the regular season winning monthly prizes from Bestway and Jim McLean Golf Academy at Shaw-Nee Slopes.
