CALGARY, AB -- The Flames Foundation for Life and YMCA Calgary are launching a new partnership to provide free YMCA memberships for Grade 6 students in Calgary. These city‐wide memberships will allow youth access to all YMCA Calgary locations and to special Calgary Flames sponsored activities to inspire them to live healthier, more active lives.
Grade 6 is a time of transition for many young people as they age out of traditional care models and transition into junior high. It is a time of decision‐making and the Flames Foundation for Life and YMCA Calgary want to help young Calgarians make positive choices.
“We want to make an impact on youth wellness in this city and this is a big step,” said Helene Weir, President and CEO, YMCA Calgary. “The YMCA is a place where Calgary’s youth can feel safe, explore new interests, make friends, and get to know some great adult leaders who recognize the importance of personal wellness and community.”
"By encouraging today's youth to live healthy lives we can meet our goal of making Calgary the healthiest city in North America," said Ken King, President and CEO, Calgary Flames. "The YMCA is a fun and engaging place and we are to proud partner with them to motivate, educate and inspire youth."
Parents of youth entering Grade 6 can bring proof of their child’s grade to any YMCA Calgary location to sign them up for their free Grade 6 membership. The program will officially launch September 1, 2014.
