Flames welcome new jersey numbers

by Aaron Vickers / Calgary Flames

CALGARY, AB -- Brad Treliving didn’t hesitate to welcome newly acquired Dougie Hamilton to the fold Friday, presenting him with jersey No. 27.

Then, before his next introduction, the Calgary Flames general manager paused and suggested his next jersey presentation might stir up a question or two, and handed off a freshly pressed No. 67 to Michael Frolik.

Higher numbers are back in play for the Flames.

“We talked at length,” Treliving said. “Both (director of hockey operations Brian Burke) and I were very much insistent in our belief of the policy we have. The great thing about our organization is we’ve had hall of fame players that have had numbers that have slowly come out of commission and (we’re) running out of numbers.

“Then we have players wearing training camp numbers and getting acclimatized to it and difficult to change. The two factors here, we spoke over the last few days, and really we don’t want to put this on Michael, this is on me, we made the decision to expand our numbers.”

The decision will allow Frolik to maintain his familiar No. 67, digits he’s worn with the Winnipeg Jets, Chicago Blackhawks and Florida Panthers, through all 512 career NHL games, and the Rimouski Oceanic of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Not that there’s sentimental value attached, though.

“There’s nothing particular for that,” Frolik said. “I just like the number. There’s no means to that. When I got to junior here I decided to get a little bit higher number and obviously my favourite player is Jaromir Jagr. He’s 68. I said lets go one number lower than him.”

The allowance also gave forward Brandon Bollig the option to return to his familiar No. 52, which he wore as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks, and will sport again this season with the Flames.

Sam Bennett, who wore No. 63 during his brief stint in Calgary last season, will move to No. 93 -- the number he sported as a member of the Kingston Frontenacs.

Not all will be trending higher, though.

Josh Jooris, who maintained his rookie camp No. 86 throughout the 2014-15 season, will move to No. 16.
