CALGARY - The National Hockey League, the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) and Bloomage International jointly announced today that the Calgary Flames and Boston Bruins will travel to China in September to participate in the 2018 O.R.G. NHL China Games.
On Saturday, September 15, the Calgary Flames will play host to the Boston Bruins in the first of two preseason games at Shenzhen Universiade Center in Shenzhen, and on Wednesday, September 19, the Bruins will host the Flames at Cadillac Arena in Beijing.
This announcement advances the NHL and the NHLPA's commitment to grow the game globally, while furthering the League and the Association's international strategy.
"I think this is going to be a great experience for our guys," said general manager Brad Treliving. "This is a great opportunity for us to experience a different culture while showcasing our league and our product."
"Any time you can get together on a trip like this it goes a long way in building chemistry as a team," said Sean Monahan. "I don't think people realize how big of a deal this is [for us]. You want to be able to experience as much of the world as you can. To able to do it with your teammates, your friends, it will be special."
The Flames organization has previously invested time in growing the game of hockey in China when in 2013, Calgary alumni travelled to Hong Kong to promote hockey and help gain increased interest and support for the game.
This trip saw alumni such as Lanny McDonald Colin Patterson, Perry Berezan Dana Murzyn, Joel Otto, Jim Peplinski, and Jamie Macoun, among others, participate in a coaching and skating clinic, off-ice social events with participants, and a road hockey game against the Canadian International School followed by a black tie gala in support of the Society for the Promotion of Hospice Care.
This was the largest initiative of its kind to support hockey development and awareness in Hong Kong and never before saw this number of former NHL players committed to the promotion of the sport of hockey in Asia. The main audience of this 2013 trip was the Canadian Chamber membership, the Hong Kong Government, Hong Kong hockey clubs, and other hockey supporters in China.
In addition, the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL continues to be involved in Calgary's Chinese community. 2018 marked the Hitmen's 12th annual Lunar New Year Celebration. The Hitmen invited members of Calgary's Chinese community to ring in the New Year with a variety of game night features including premium gifting upon entrance, hundreds of prizes for fans, lion dancers performing during the intermissions and a post-game fireworks show. These activities are all part of a commitment to continue to grow the game locally with youth.
With the population of more than 1.3 billion, China is committed to hockey and expects to expand its participation in all winter sports to 300 million people by 2022. The NHL continues to collaborate with sports bureaus across China in developing grassroots hockey programs and supporting local youth hockey and hockey development at all levels. The NHL will continue to develop programs to provide schools with training and instructional content to implement these impactful hockey programs and promote physical education, sportsmanship, teamwork, and fitness through participation in hockey.
This will be the second year in a row the NHL has dropped the puck in China as the Vancouver Canucks and Los Angeles Kings played two preseason games in Shanghai and Beijing in 2017. O.R.G.
