FLAMES (13-8-2) at SHARKS (10-9-4)
TV: SNW, CSN-CA
Season series: The San Jose Sharks won three of five games last season. Sharks forward Joe Pavelski had four goals and seven points against the Calgary Flames in 2013-14.
Flames team scope: Calgary tried to rally but fell short in the opener of its three-game road trip, a 3-2 loss at the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday. The Ducks spoiled the return to Orange County of Flames goalie Jonas Hiller, who spent seven seasons with Anaheim. Hiller stopped 26 of 29 shots in the loss. "I think we have to do better," Hiller said. "We can't just hopefully win every game in the last five minutes; always being down and coming from behind might work once in a while. It shows a lot of character and we kind of showed it again tonight. I think we've got to be ready to play from the first minute on. I thought we got outworked in the first two periods. You can't just flip the switch."
Sharks team scope: San Jose has won 10 of its first 23 games this season (the Sharks played 16 of the first 21 on the road), raising speculation about coach Todd McLellan's job security. In an interview with David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News, the coach said, "I feel confident with myself and the coaching staff, but I'm also a realist. I know that the team hasn't performed to the level that any of us are happy with -- not just ownership and management, but also coaches and players aren't happy with the results." … Sharks forward Raffi Torres said Tuesday he plans to start skating again in the next week, and when he does he'll do so without the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. "People have helped me along the way and I'm hoping that I can get back and start helping this team out the way I know I can," Torres said, according to CSN Bay Area. "At the end of the day, I haven't played in a couple years, but I feel good. Mentally, I feel refreshed. … Coming back here puts that fire back in my body." Torres has played 12 games since the start of last season.
