CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames announced today they have signed forward Michael Ferland to an NHL entry-level contract.
"We are very pleased to have Michael under contract and look forward to watching his continued development in Junior Hockey," said Flames general manager Jay Feaster. "Having this important career milestone behind him will enable him to focus on the upcoming Team Canada World Junior Selection Camp as well as building upon the excellent season he is having in Brandon. Michael looked good in our Development Camp in July, and had a very solid Rookie Tournament and NHL Training Camp in September.
"We were impressed that he continued to build on those experiences with the Wheat Kings and played his way into the Subway Series last month and ultimately into the Team Canada Selection Camp. Having both Michael Ferland and Max Reinhart, our other invitee to Team Canada’s Camp, and two of our most promising prospects, under contract and in the fold is an important step for our organization and the future success of our hockey club."
Ferland was Calgary’s fifth round draft pick, 133rd overall, in the 2010 Entry Draft and is in his third season with the Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL). Ferland is currently ninth in WHL points (42) and tied for tenth in goals (17). He is second on his team in goals, assists and points and on November 28 was named as one of 41 players, along with Max Reinhart, invited to Canada’s National Junior Team Selection Camp.
"It's very exciting to get it done with, a dream come true," Ferland said. "I know me and my agent have been talking with the Flames organization and it's just a great feeling."
Contract Term: Three year entry level contract with an average annual value of $825,000.
