CALGARY, AB – The Calgary Flames will honour Hall of Fame broadcaster Peter Maher tomorrow when they host the Anaheim Ducks at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats for 7:00 P.M. as the evening will include a pre-game ceremony.
Maher will be in attendance at tomorrow morning’s practice and will be available to media beginning at 11:30 A.M. in the Ed Whalen Media Lounge on event level at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Last season, members of the Flames’ travelling media introduced the Flames Good Guy Award which acknowledges Flames players who maintain patience and a good-natured attitude. Local media have officially re-named the award in honour of Peter Maher, representing the qualities of respect and professionalism that Peter always demonstrated. The award will be on display tomorrow in the Ed Whalen Media Lounge.
Additionally, fans of the Flames legendary play-by-play voice can capture part of the Maher magic with ringtones of some of his signature calls: Yeah Baby and You Can Put It in the Win Column, available for download at www.calgaryflames.com/yeahbaby.
Peter Maher’s career spanned over four decades and he was voice of the Flames since the 1981-82 season calling 2,954 Flames games. He was honoured by the Hockey Hall of Fame as the winner of the 2006 Foster Hewett Memorial Award and as a native of Campbellton, New Brunswick, was also inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. Maher has called World Championship games, six NHL All-Star games, the Stanley Cup Finals in 1980, 1986, 1989 and 2004 and the 2010 Winter Olympics.
