We’re excited about the chance to play the Flames prospects again and it provides a good opportunity for our guys to play against some top level talent. - Dinos head coach Mark Howell
CALGARY, AB -- The University of Calgary and the Calgary Flames have announced that the Dinos men’s hockey team will play the Flames rookies at Winsport‘s Markin MacPhail Centre in the International Arena in an exhibition game on Monday, Sept. 9.
This will be the second installment of a game modeled after similar contests played in Vancouver and Edmonton, where fans will be able to see a sneak peek of the 2013-14 Dinos squad, as well as the future stars of the National Hockey League. The two teams played in 2011 when the Flames rookies prevailed 4-0, and it was the first time since 2004.
The puck will drop at 7:00 PM.
“We’re excited about the chance to play the Flames prospects again and it provides a good opportunity for our guys to play against some top level talent,” said Dinos head coach Mark Howell. “It’s a privilege to be able to showcase our product to a larger audience because of the Flames’ fanbase and this is a great way to continue to grow ours as well.”
Last season, the Dinos finished with a regular season record of 17-11, before defeating the UBC Thunderbirds in the Canada West quarterfinals. In a battle of Alberta, the Dinos fell to the eventual Canada West champions, the Alberta Bears, in straight games. The University of Calgary men’s hockey team will hope to make it’s way back to the CIS University Cup this upcoming season, for the first time since 2010-11.
The Dinos head into the season with a big recruiting class. New recruit Tyler Moir will be relied upon to add some scoring punch with the departure of top-six forwards Brock Nixon and Corey Banfield. Moir is one of two new players with experience from the professional ranks, joining Daniel Gibb with time in the ECHL. Last season, Howell brought in the defensive duo of Alex Dzielski and Giffen Nyren, both out of the ECHL as well.
The Dinos begin the 2013-14 regular season on the road against the Regina Cougars in a double header on Oct. 4-5, before heading to Father David Bauer arena for their home opener against the UBC Thunderbirds on Oct. 11-12.
Tickets for the Sept. 9 game go on sale Aug. 15 on goDINOS.com. A portion of the proceeds from the event will go towards supporting men’s hockey scholarships at the University of Calgary. Tickets are $15 and are assigned seating at Winsport‘s Markin MacPhail Centre in the International Arena.
