CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames are thrilled to be a part of Esso Minor Hockey Week which kicks off today, January 11th in 37 different facilities around Calgary. The opening ceremonies will begin tonight at 7 p.m. where Trails West takes on Southland in the feature game involving two division 5 Atom teams at the Calgary Flames Community Arena Red. The Flames will be participating in tonight’s feature game with special guests Harvey the Hound, Calgary Flames anthem signer Heather Liscano and Flames prizing throughout the game.
The Flames and Harvey the Hound are also excited about a marathon inspired feat to visit 26 rinks and 42 games in Harvey’s Minor Hockey Marathon. Watch for Harvey the Hound on Sunday, January 13th at arenas around Calgary. Harvey’s route will be chronicled through the Calgary Flames Twitter account and hashtagged #HMHM.
Esso Minor Hockey Week kicked off in 1970 and is the largest minor hockey tournament in the world. It includes all Hockey Calgary players from Novice to Junior (7 to 21 year olds). This means more than 11,300 players, 655 teams, 2,200 coaches and over 22,000 parents keep this tournament going strong. Over 930 games are played on 52 sheets of ice in 37 different facilities across the city. The Calgary Flames and the Flames Foundation for Life are proud partners with Hockey Calgary and Esso Minor Hockey Week in support of grassroots sports and hockey development.
