Flames look to keep rolling in Los Angeles

by Staff Writer / Calgary Flames

FLAMES (24-18-3) at KINGS (20-14-11)

TV: SN, FS-W

Season series: Forward Johnny Gaudreau had the first hat trick of his career in the Calgary Flames' 4-3 overtime win against the Los Angeles Kings on Dec. 22. Flames goalie Jonas Hiller made 26 saves in a 2-1 win on Dec. 29. Calgary is 5-2-0 in its past seven games at Staples Center.

Flames team scope: Forward Sean Monahan scored 24 seconds into overtime to give Calgary a 4-3 win against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. After a 13-game scoring drought, Monahan has goals in back-to-back games and is gaining confidence. "When you put the puck in the net it gives you that confidence," Monahan told the Flames website Sunday. "Once you get one I think they start coming. Lucky enough I got another one [Saturday] and hopefully I can keep going." Since being recalled on Jan. 8, goaltender Joni Ortio is 3-0-0 with a .953 save percentage, including a 36-save shutout in a 1-0 win against the Vancouver Canucks on Jan. 10. Ortio got the win Saturday and stopped Sharks forward Patrick Marleau on a breakaway late in the game to keep the score tied. "Huge," coach Bob Hartley told the Calgary Herald. "Huge. Joni was clutch at the right time. I don't think that it was a tough game to play, but 3-3 tie and here comes Marleau, so it was a huge save."

Kings team scope: After a 3-2 shootout loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, Los Angeles fell to 1-7 in the skills competition this season, tied for worst in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings. "Obviously the shootout has been an issue for the whole year," forward Marian Gaborik told the Kings website Sunday. "The points are getting away from us in the shootout, so we just need to find a way to put some goals in." Former Kings defenceman Rob Blake had his No. 4 jersey retired prior to the game Saturday. The Kings have lost five of their past six games (1-2-3). Goalie Jonathan Quick hasn't won since New Year's Day, 3-2 against the Vancouver Canucks. The Kings face the Sharks on Wednesday prior to the All-Star break, which ends Jan. 26.
