CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames and Sport Chek Development Camp is set to take place this Saturday, August 22nd and Sunday, August 23rd at the SAIT Campus. The youth hockey camp, created by Rob Kerr, will be hosted by the SAIT Trojans and features players from the Flames Foundation’s EvenStrength Program, HEROS (Hockey Education Reaching Out Society), Football Hockey Link and Canadian Tire Jumpstart.
“Sport Chek believes every kid deserves the opportunity to play sports and be active, regardless of their financial situation,” said Frederick Lecoq, Senior Vice President, Marketing, FGL Sports Ltd. “Working with Rob Kerr and the Flames has allowed us to do more than just support this camp financially. Sport Chek employees are also volunteering to help make sure every kid has a remarkable and memorable experience.”
The two-day camp will include on-ice coaching, classroom instruction, hockey presentations, sport activities and a big league experience game for youth participants. Calgary Flames prospect and 2015 Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player Jon Gillies will attend the camp on Sunday for a ceremonial puck-drop and to sign autographs for the young players while Flames alumnus members Rene Corbet and Jeff Shantz will act as honourary coaches for the big league game. Players and their families will also take in presentations from two-time Olympic champion and Canada’s reigning Athlete-of-the-Year Kaillie Humphries and Calgary Stampeders defensive lineman DeQuin Evans.
“It’s exciting that in the fourth year of the camp we are able to bring so many individuals and groups together, like Sport Chek and the Calgary Flames, to help give Calgary and area kids a once in a lifetime opportunity to participate in camp like this,” said Rob Kerr. “While this hockey camp has been built on a great foundation by volunteers from the Calgary sports media, the SAIT Trojans, and other from Calgary’s hockey communities, our continuing partnership with the Flames and Sport Chek only enhance the experience for the kids.”
Players will receive instruction and activities based on the principles of teamwork, leadership and respect in sport. Representatives from the Flames Foundation for Life, Sport Chek, local media outlets and the SAIT Trojans hockey team will volunteer as instructors and assist on both days. Media availability will take place on Sunday, August 23rd at 1:00 pm.
The Flames EvenStrength Program and HEROS are both supported by the Flames Foundation for Life on an annual basis. The Flames EvenStrength Program has distributed over $1 million to more than 2,500 kids since its inception in order to assist families who require financial assistance to register in hockey.
The Flames Foundation for Life continues to work towards improving the lives of Southern Alberta though support of grassroots and amateur sports, education and health and wellness initiatives.
