FACING THE SHARKS
Tonight's match-up is the third in a five-game season series between the Calgary Flames and San Jose Sharks. The Flames opened this year's series with a 3-2 win in San Jose on Nov. 3 but the Sharks evened things out with a 4-1 victory on Dec. 20 at the SAP Center.
In their last 10 games against the Sharks, the Flames hold a 6-3-1 record. Four of their last five meetings have been settled by a single goal and two of those tilts needed overtime or a shootout.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS VS. SAN JOSE
Ladislav Smid picked up his first NHL point (an assist) against San Jose on Oct. 12, 2006 as a member of the Edmonton Oilers.
Matthew Tkachuk recorded his first NHL multi-goal game against the Sharks when he had a pair of tallies on Nov. 3, 2016.
On Monday, the Flames made a switch on the blueline, recalling Brett Kulak and assigning Tyler Wotherspoon to the Stockton Heat of the American Hockey League. Kulak did not play in Monday's 2-0 loss to the Winnipeg Jets but joined the team in Manitoba that day.
Kulak started the season with the Flames, playing in 15 games this season before being sent to Stockton. During that stretch in the NHL, the 23-year-old had three assists.
Wotherspoon has played in four games with the Flames this season. Since being drafted in the second round of the 2011 NHL Draft, the rearguard has played in 30 NHL games.
On Tuesday, it was announced that Johnny Gaudreau will play in his third consecutive All-Star Game in Los Angeles later this month. The 23-year-old will be the lone representative for the Flames and he is tied for the club lead in points with 27 despite missing 10 games with a broken finger. Gaudreau had a goal and two assists to help Team Pacific to the victory in last year's All-Star Game and he had a pair of assists playing for the victorious Team Toews in 2015.
