Duane Sutter at Sutter Cup ceremony

by Staff Writer / Calgary Flames

Calgary, Alberta (March 09, 2011) – The Sutter Cup Tournament Committee is pleased to announce that Duane Sutter will speak for the Sutter Fund at the Opening Ceremony (March 10th 6:30 p.m.) of the 9th annual edition of the Sutter Cup minor midget AAA hockey tournament.

Duane Sutter is known for playing on four consecutive Stanley Cup winners with the New York Islanders during his 11-year playing career, spending eight seasons with the Islanders and three with the Chicago Blackhawks, before retiring after the 1989-90 campaign. Sutter appeared in 731 NHL games, recording 139 goals, 342 points and 1,333 penalty minutes. After completing his playing career, he spent two seasons as a scout for the Blackhawks, before taking over as head coach of the team's IHL affiliate in Indianapolis for three years. Duane Sutter joined the Calgary Flames in the summer of 2008 following 11 seasons with the Florida Panthers management group.

We are grateful for the continued title sponsorship of the Sutter Fund. This support ensures the best minor midget AAA teams in Alberta can come together and compete against each other at the end of regular hockey season. We encourage fans to come out and Catch the Rising Stars at the Sutter Cup. Admission is free of charge this year.

The Sutter Cup tournament supports the development of minor hockey in Alberta and will recognize some of the Rising Stars in Calgary’s minor hockey system.

Twelve of Alberta’s top minor midget AAA hockey teams (15 year olds) are playing off March 10th to 13th for the right to represent southern Alberta in a provincial playoff. Teams from as far north as Red Deer and as far south as Lethbridge (and Medicine Hat) and as far west as Cochrane and east to Strathmore will all converge on the Max Bell Centre for this all-important weekend. For some elite 15-year-old players (Rising Stars) this will be the fans’ last chance to see them before they turn 16 and make the move to the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) or the Western Hockey League (WHL). Scouts and team management from these elite leagues will be in attendance to evaluate all of the players.

The theme for this year’s Sutter Cup is “Catch a Rising Star”. Throughout the tournament, the Rising Stars of the minor hockey feeder communities in Calgary will be recognized, beginning with the Opening Ceremonies on March 10th (6:30 p.m.) and culminating in the PeeWee shootout Saturday, March 12th (3:45 p.m.).

The tournament will be held in Calgary from March 10th to 13th with all games being played at the Max Bell Centre.
