Matthew Coronato and the USA kicked off their 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship with a 5-1 win over Germany on Tuesday night.
The dominant victory saw the Americans outshoot the Germans 50-11, including opening the game with a 15-0 stretch. Coronato led all skaters with seven shots.

Luke Hughes opened the scoring for the USA at the 13:39 mark with a hard shot from the blueline that beat an up-siege Nikita Quapp in the German net.
Coronato, the Flames' 2021 first-round pick, set up the USA's second goal in the opening period, coming on the power play. Carrying the puck in from the neutral zone as the Americans were regrouping, he weaved past German defender Arkadiusz Dziambor and then slipped the puck over to a streaking Logan Cooley, who was able to tuck it past Quapp.

Early in the second period, Landon Slaggert made it a 3-0 game at the 1:21 mark and Red Savage pushed it 4-0 when he was able to jam in a loose puck at 1:57. The Americans would close out the second period with a 5-0 lead thanks to Riley Duran's shot from the face-off circle drifted past Quapp at with just a minute remaining in the frame.
The Germans ended Kaidan Mbereko's shutout bid with a goal from Joshua Samanski at 13:21 in the third period.
"We really had a good start to the game, and I liked how we stuck with it throughout," coach Nate Leaman told USA Hockey. "We had six or seven good chances and Germany's goaltender was making good saves. We could've gotten frustrated, but we didn't, and eventually guys got rewarded."
Coronato and the USA are back in action on Thursday when they take on Switzerland at 8:00 PM MT.
