Comeau's Comeback

by Jeff Clemens / Calgary Flames

CALGARY, AB -- Blake Comeau came to the Flames off waivers this season after a career high season with the New York Islanders.

Unfortunately the transition was not an entirely smooth one for Comeau.

“It’s been a bit of a different year, being put on waivers and coming to a new team, I’d never experienced that before and it was a bit of a whirlwind,” said Comeau.

“There are great guys in this locker room and I’ve been welcomed with open arms and it’s frustrating for me to not be able to produce like that year. I don’t think this year has summed me up as a player. I think I can produce more than I have and I want to finish the season strong and try to contribute where I can to help us get into the playoffs.”

The issue of finishing was something that was keeping Comeau from getting pucks in the net and caused him to go 16 games without a goal despite a great effort on the ice. Despite a lower number of goals, Comeau has been working hard to contribute in other ways to the team.

“It seems like they haven’t been going in that easily for me this year but I want to make sure that if I’m not scoring I’m doing something else for the team, whether it’s playing physical or penalty killing or playing good defensive hockey,” said Comeau when asked about his season

Comeau broke the slump last night on a takeaway cause by Matt Stajan which involved Stars player Mike Ribero passing the puck to Comeau in front of the net.

“At the time I wasn’t sure how the puck got there but I saw afterwards it was a nice little gift. It was a good job by Stajan getting in on the forecheck and pressuring him, he made a mistake and I tried to get it into the net as quick as I could,” said Comeau

“It was a good feeling, I feel like I’ve been doing some good things the last little while with getting pucks on the net, having some good chances with the post and seemed like they weren’t going in. It was a good feeling to contribute but more importantly for us to get the win.”

At this point in the season every point matters and having Comeau back scoring is sure to make the difference in the final few games of the season. The Flames are currently two points out of the playoffs and still fighting of the playoff spot.
