CALGARY, AB – At a press conference held this afternoon, the Calgary Stampede announced that it will be ready to go for Sneak-a-Peek on July 4. Guests can scout out the new foods, ride the midway and check out the Agriculture displays, Stampede Market Place and the Western Oasis.
“Many southern Albertans continue to struggle with the clean-up and fall-out of flooding,” said Bob Thompson, president and chairman of the board, Calgary Stampede, “The Stampede provides our community with a place to pause, to come together and join with friends and families, and share our hopes and values and what we have in common. I’ve been thrilled to see our volunteers in action at the city’s reception centres for evacuees and hosting breakfasts over the past few days for Calgary volunteers helping with cleanup in Mission and Erlton, for Siksika families and for military personnel. This year, the community is putting on Stampede 101 - just like it always has.”
On Friday, July 5 the Calgary Stampede Parade will kick off at 9 a.m. sharp. The Parade route will remain the same, west on 6th avenue, south on 10th street SW and east on 9th Avenue, as will the broadcast location, bleacher locations, bbq/breakfast, and all programming elements. The Stampede worked closely with the City of Calgary departments responsible to ensure that safety of our participants, guests and animals is attained. An independent environmental company reviewed Fort Calgary to ensure no contamination risks exist.
Due to ongoing repairs at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the events scheduled there during the first 5 days of Stampede are being adjusted, with most moving to other venues. The Cowboy Up Challenge is moving to the Big Top, and most of the Heavy Horse shows will also be moving to the Big Top. The Team Cattle Penning Competition will be moved to Okotoks. The Marching Showband completion will be moved with details TBD. The Vintage Tractor Pull is being reformatted into a Show and Shine. The Cutting Horse Competition on July 8 has been cancelled.
We also regret to inform fans that the four Stampede concerts scheduled in the Saddledome cannot proceed as scheduled due to the damages the facility suffered during the recent flooding. The concerts that were scheduled are Carly Rae Jepsen – Wednesday, July 10; Tim McGraw – Thursday, July 11; Dixie Chicks – Friday July 12 and KISS – Saturday, July 13.
“We understand that this news is disappointing to fans and we’re disappointed too as we wanted to present our guests and fans with an awesome concert experience,” says Vern Kimball, chief executive officer, Calgary Stampede. “It became evident yesterday to both the Stampede and the Flames that the services necessary for a proper concert experience for fans and for the artists just weren't available given the current status and limitations of the building.”
“The Flames appreciate the Stampede spirit and our community’s patience. CANA Construction and their trades have been working very hard on a number of fronts simultaneously including addressing issues related to electrical power, potable water, air conditioning, air quality, and personal safety,” says Ken King, President and CEO of the Calgary Flames. “Ultimately, due to the flood, it just isn’t feasible to go ahead on July 10.”
Given the size of the four shows, and that they are all intended for indoor set-ups with tailored effects and lighting, there was no feasible alternative to host any one of the shows at another Calgary venue during Stampede.
Ticket holders should hold on to their tickets. All ticket holders will still receive admission to Stampede on the day of their concert by showing their concert tickets. We are hoping to reschedule these shows at a later date and we’ll know more about potential rescheduling opportunities after Stampede. Ticketholders should continue to check the Stampede’s and TicketMaster’s websites for rescheduling updates and/or refund information.
