BLOG: What's with Hiller's mask?

by Jason Johnson / Calgary Flames

Jonas Hiller's mask seems to be a hot-button topic these days,

The Flames signed Hiller to a two-year contract on July 1 and the Flames goaltender showed up to training camp with a simple red mask.

The solid red lid has a pattern flowing through parts of it and includes a small logo that matches the crest on the Flames third jersey on each side as well as a gold coloured cage. The back of the mask has a regular ole' flaming "C" logo as well as the logo for the NHL's Hockey Fights Cancer initiative.

Compared to many goalie masks around the league, it's quite plain.

"This one was more of a prototype because we have to have it tested and proofed first," Hiller remarked. "I didn’t do a big paint job because I wanted to make sure I can play with it first."

Hiller claims he will get a new mask which will likely include an aesthetic facelift soon.

"There’s still some testing going on and some back-and-fourth," he said. "I’m planning on getting a second one with a little design probably. People talk about [now] so I think it’s already cool for that."

Although Hiller donned a plain black mask for some time when he was a member of the Anaheim Ducks, he also sported a couple of very creative and interesting designs. In 2010, he had a special Movember design which featured photos of his teammates in various faux moustaches.

He also had a bright orange mask painted specifically for the Stadium Series outdoor game last season between the Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings.

Another mask he wore during his tenure in Anaheim had a silhouette of a surfer surrounded by palm trees inside of a Ducks logo and was compliments with shiny gold foil.

As for when we might expect to see the new digs, Hiller isn't sure.

I don’t know, hopefully soon," Hiller said. "We’ll find out soon – I think testing should be completed by the end of the month and we will go from there."

For now, it's not clear who is winning the battle for the clear-cut starting goaltender position for the Flames. Both Hiller and Karri Ramo have been fantastic between the pipes in the early going.

It seems that Ramo may be winning the mask battle. For now, anyways.
