John Gibson stopped 26-of-28 shots in his 33rd start. The All-Star netminders ranks in the top ten in the NHL in saves, minutes played and save percentage (min. 10 GP)
Rickard Rakell scored his 148th career goal, all with the Ducks, passing Bobby Ryan for sixth in club history. The 28-year-old has 331 points (148-183=331) in 536 career games. Steve Rucchin is next on the list, currently fifth with 153 goals as a Duck.
The overtime loss moved Anaheim into a tie with Vegas atop the Pacific Division at 55 points, though the Golden Knights hold three games in hand. The Ducks are fifth by point percentage (.573), narrowly behind the Kings (.576) and Oilers (.573).
Detroit captain Dylan Larkin put the home team on the board in the final minute of the first period, beating Kevin Shattenkirk wide off the rush and lifting a backhander over Gibson's glove.
The goal snapped a streak of five consecutive games in which Anaheim had scored first.
Larkin has four points (3-2=5) in his last two games and seven goals (7-2=9) in his last seven appearances.
Anaheim responded early in the middle frame when Rakell cashed in on a neutral zone takeaway by Adam Henrique. As Detroit tried to break the puck out of its defensive end, Henrique stepped in front of a centering pass before setting up Rakell in the high slot for the game-tying goal.
Rakell has scored in back-to-back games and collected four points (2-2=4) on the road trip.
Both teams took a cautious approach in the third period, trying to limit the oppostion's scoring changes and slowing the pace of play. Detroit appeared to take the lead with just under four minutes left in regulation, but Filip Hronek was ruled to have kicked the puck into the net, keeping the score level at one heading to overtime.
The Red Wings secured the extra point in the five-minute session after an unfortunate whistle by the referee nullified what appeared to be a 2-on-1 rush for the Ducks. Oesterle scored off the subsequent faceoff, clinching Detroit's 2-1 victory.
Anaheim returns from the NHL All-Star break on Friday, Feb. 11 against the Seattle Kraken at Honda Center. Tickets are on sale now.
