Head coach Randy Carlyle is looking for a far better performance out of his group tonight than what was displayed last night in the form of a 5-0 shutout loss in San Jose. Though preseason standings mean nothing, the time is now to execute systems properly and play the game the right way.
"We turned the puck over 23 times at the opposition's blueline," Carlyle said. "If we do that again, we won't win. It's pretty simple. We need more than that, and we know there is an opportunity for improvement with our group. We've made that very clear."
Sprinkled alongside the veterans tonight are prospects looking to stand out. Can these young players elevate their game alongside full-time NHL regulars? Rosters spots are available, but it's up to the rookies to earn them.
"I want to be here," said Jones, 19. "I'm a fast skater, so they're trying to stress the fact that I need to skate through the neutral zone a lot more, carry the puck through the neutral zone with speed and enter the zone with speed. I'm a pretty big kid still, so if I can get my body in front of the net, along with my speed, I should be turning defenders, getting down low, using my body to protect the puck and making plays happen."
Plenty of eyes will also be on Steel, drafted 30th overall in 2016 - six spots after the Ducks selected Jones. Coming off a monster season with Regina in the Western Hockey League, Steel is hoping to make the leap to the NHL after three full seasons in juniors.
"I'm trying to stick here as long as I can," Steel said. "That's the way I'm looking at it. I thought I played decent in the rookie tournament and carried it into the practices and the black-and-white game. I'm working hard, doing what I can. All I can do is play hockey."
UPDATE: Coyotes line combinations from their pregame skate in Arizona.
