Oct. 26, 2014
7-2-0, 14 Standings Points
On the Sharks
We weren’t ready from the beginning. They came out strong; they lost last night. They came at us pretty hard, and we weren’t ready for it. That’s just not good enough.
On tonight’s game
We didn’t play good. Right from the start, we had opportunities, myself included. It wasn’t a good night for our group. We didn’t come out and play our best game. You’re going to play one of those games once and a while. It just sucks that it came against those guys.
On the post-whistle scrums
Tensions ran high for both teams. We dealt with them. We stuck together as a group. That’s the main thing.
Head coach Bruce Boudreau
On the Sharks setting the tone early
In the first and second periods, they played like the Sharks can play. They were extremely good, and we weren’t ready. That’s my fault to get this team ready. They came out and overpowered us in the first period, and they didn’t stop.
On when frustration set in
We got wound up when we got the embellishment penalty. There were some things going on, but it was just two teams that competed hard against one another. One wasn’t used to losing recently, and we couldn’t do anything to match what they were doing. We were frustrated. When you’re frustrated, stuff happens.
SAN JOSE SHARKS
On the game
It wasn’t an easy day to play. It was a tough loss the other night but it was good we got another chance to redeem ourselves and play right away. It was back-to-back. It’s a good team over there. Our guys did a really good job sticking together. [Niemi] was great on the penalty kill early. That’s where we’ve struggled lately, on the penalty kill. That gave us confidence early.
On the physicality
We wanted to find a way to win. Those games, you can come together as a team and when you win those games. At the end of the day you have to find a way to win.
On the game
There’s never going to be a perfect game, you’re always going to make mistakes. It was a solid 60-minute effort. Everybody stood up for one another. The power play and penalty kill was outstanding. Obviously they got a goal, but when you give them seven power plays they’re going to score.
On being focused
I said it yesterday, we were playing today which doesn’t give you time to dwell on the loss yesterday. We were playing probably the best team in the league right now and it was a great opportunity to get back on track and we did that. Guys were excited to play.
Head coach Todd McLellan
On ending the team’s losing streak
It was a big win for us. We needed a win any way we could get it. The fact it comes against a rival who’s probably the best team in the league right now, we’ll take that. It’s one day. I’m proud of the way the group responded. We didn’t have an easy day today.
On the physicality
It was two teams that were kind of at different emotional levels. They were cruising along and playing real well, and we were frustrated because we had been losing. Paths kind of crossed and things flipped over. The rivalry, they’re a competitive group, we’re a competitive group so it’s just how it went.
