Anaheim 3 vs. San Jose 2 (SO)
Oct. 9, 2016
2-5-1, 5 pts.
On the victory
Tonight, we came out of the gate a little slow, but good teams find ways to win. It took more than 60 minutes, but we found a way. Even though we gave up good scoring chances, I felt we played the right way. That made my decisions pretty easy on those two on ones and backdoor plays. My defense was in the right spots for me to make the right reads.
On his overtime breakaway save on Hertl
That's three-on-three, so you're going to get those two-on-ones and breakaways. You're going to have to make those saves if you want to win. What a play by [Corey] Perry, that's for sure.
On the game
It wasn't one of our prettiest wins, but at the end of the day we found a way to win the game. That's what it's all about. There are some areas we need to work on and improve on, and the power play is one of them. We were trying to be too cute tonight. We didn't shoot the puck or work hard enough for second opportunities. We'll be good in Dallas.
On his first goal
It's a great feeling. I managed to pick the puck from their defenseman. I was a little tired on that breakaway, so I took an early shot. It's a great feeling and it's good for the confidence.
Assistant Coach Paul MacLean
On the takeaways from the game
The way we responded in the second half of the game was excellent. We scored two goals five-on-five and took the game to overtime. To win it the way we did was very good. We got a little distracted at the start of the game, but got our feet back under us in the second half of the game.
On Silfverberg's performance
He had the opportunity to shoot the puck in spots where he likes to shoot from, and he didn't make any mistakes. That's exciting for us to see. That's a good sign for us.
SAN JOSE SHARKS
On going into regular season
I felt pretty good about it [tonight]. We had a lot of our top guys out tonight, and once they get back in I think we'll be a good team.
On the Sharks' penalty kill
We killed a lot of penalties. I think we were getting a little tired by the end of the game. We were great on the penalty kill all night.
On the Sharks' play
I think we played well. Obviously it was a tough game. It was a good way to end the last preseason game. There were good fights and hard battling. We played well for most of the game. It sucks to lose 3-2, but that's the way it goes sometimes. They battled back and they got the last overtime goal.
On the physicality of the game
It's part of hockey. It's a part of two teams that don't really like each other. It gets tight out there and guys want to win. Everybody handled it well.
Head Coach Peter DeBoer
On how far or close the Sharks are to their goal after camp
I think we've had a good camp, six, seven guys aren't here so it's tough to tell what the real team is going to look like. I like the camp we've had and I'm really proud of the effort.
On who has impressed him the most in the camp
I don't know if there is one guy, the depth of the group has probably impressed me the most. We've got, in my mind, four or five forwards, two or three defensemen who aren't going to be on the team, but I'm going to have confidence bringing them up and putting them on the ice which is a great luxury.
