Murray Addresses Trade Deadline

by Staff Writer / Anaheim Ducks
Ducks Executive Vice President and General Manager Bob Murray addresses the trade deadline.

On how close he was to making a deal
I thought we were going down the right track for most of the day. We were trying to accomplish something that obviously didn’t get done. It’s funny you asked me the question last week about [draft] picks. I had four this year and next year in the top two rounds. Let me put it this way…every one of those picks was put into play today. It failed to get anything done, but in saying that, I wasn’t going to – and did not – offer any player off this roster because I strongly believe this team is good enough. But you always try to make a hockey trade if a hockey trade is there. I just didn’t make a hockey trade today.

On his feelings regarding trade partners
Confused, but that’s okay. This is a good hockey team. With [Stephane] Robidas coming in, we’ve shored up the defense. I believe it’s a good hockey team in there with the depth we have. It is what it is. Again, we were not going to put any players in that dressing room out there, and we didn’t. But, pretty much every pick we had was out there.

On if yesterday’s moves were precursors to potential moves today
Going into trade deadlines and drafts, you have game plans and things you’re trying to accomplish all the time. I’m a firm believer now that hockey trades happen at the draft more than they happen at the trade deadline. The trade deadline is more about rentals. We even tried to get a rental today with a couple draft picks, which is something I don’t normally do. It didn’t happen. Nothing yesterday changed today because yesterday was part of a game plan I was able to accomplish yesterday. Our group had chances to get things done, and we got things done. You always have game plans.

On if he was considering taking a crack at making a big trade
Taking a crack at trying to make it better. But I can’t state it enough. They’ve already proven they don’t need any help. They’ve proven they can play. We have a lot of good young players in there that have a chance to continue going. We didn’t bring anybody in there that’s going to upset the apple cart, which we were very careful of, too. There were some things that could’ve taken place with guys that upset the apple cart, and we weren’t going to do that.

On his thoughts regarding his current roster
I’m comfortable. I was comfortable going in, and was really comfortable after yesterday because there were some things that had to get done that got done just for the mental stability of the group. They got done. Today, you tried to, if you could, improve it a bit.

On his confidence with the current roster
All year long, this group has managed to do things. We’ve left it in their hands and they’ve come through pretty well so far. Again, I have total faith in that group in there.
