Kings 3, Ducks 2

by Staff Writer / Anaheim Ducks

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Alexander Frolov netted a pair of goals to lead the Los Angeles Kings over the Ducks 3-2 on Sunday at Honda Center.

Ryan Getzlaf and Todd Marchant tallied for Anaheim which suffered only its third defeat in regulation this season. The Ducks now stand at 20-3-6 with 46 points and remain the top team in the NHL standings.

"They deserved to win," said Ducks captain Scott Niedermayer. "They were skating and played a good hockey game. There's no question we didn't do the things we wanted to do for most of the game. Some of that credit goes to the opposition. They played hard. We didn't respond well. There's no question we can be better, but they played well."

The Ducks and Kings traded first period power play goals to begin the scoring.

Getzlaf, who has tallied four goals in his last five games, gave Anaheim a 1-0 lead at 7:00 of the first period. Defenseman Chris Pronger and Getzlaf were set up on their off shot at the point on the power play. Pronger faked a slap shot and dished a soft pass to Getzlaf who rocketed a one-timer past LA netminder Dan Cloutier for his 12th goal of the season.

Anaheim took four minor penalties in the first period after their opening tally and Los Angeles capitalized on their fourth, a cross checking minor to Chris Pronger at 17:10.

Sean Avery worked to disrupt an Anaheim clearing attempt along the half wall and kept the puck inside the Ducks' zone. Lubomir Visnovsky grabbed the loose puck and set up Frolov for a one-timer inside the left face off circle. Frolov's goal was his team-leading 15th of the season.

Los Angeles took the lead at 9:25 of the second period. After a turnover in front of the Ducks net, Derek Armstrong managed to get a backhand past Bryzgalov to give the Kings a 2-1 lead.

Bryzgalov had to leave the contest at the 7:26 mark of the third period after suffering an apparent injury after making a save on Frolov. He was replaced by JS Giguere.

Frolov netted what would be the game winner at 18:44 of the third. Avery got a pass to Frolov alone in front of the Anaheim net and the Kings' winger beat Giguere for his second goal of the game to give LA a 3-1 lead.

Marchant made it 3-2 late in the third period with his seventh goal of the season at 19:22. Marchant drove home the rebound of a Dustin Penner shot to get the Ducks within a goal.

"I don't think we played desperate enough until late in the hockey game and that's was the difference," said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle. "They were a more desperate hockey team to start and it seemed like we got frustrated with it and didn't react in the proper way. There aren't too many times you can say that about this group, but tonight was one of those nights."

The Ducks next face the Nashville Predators on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at Honda Center.
