Two of Anaheim’s 2008 draft picks had huge performances over the weekend. University of Wisconsin defensemen Jake Gardiner and Nick Schultz, drafted 17th (first round) and 43rd (second round), respectively, played in the College Hockey Showcase against Michigan on Nov. 26 and Michigan State on Nov. 27. The two combined for 11 points (6-5=11) in the two games.
In the second game agaisnt the Spartans on Saturday, a 4-1 Badgers victory, Gardiner registered 0-3=3 points and Schultz notched a hat trick (3-0=3), the first hat trick by a Wisconsin defenseman since Barry Richter scored three against Minnesota Duluth exactly 18 years ago to the day on Nov. 27, 1992.
Gardiner, 20, scored 2-1=3 points and Schultz, 20, scored 1-1=2 points in a 4-4 tie against the Wolverines on Friday (first game).
Gardiner finished the two-game showcase with 2-4=6 points and Schultz had 4-1=5 points.
