Friends Christian School of Yorba Linda continued its reign of dominance at the S.C.O.R.E. Shootout street hockey tournament on Saturday, winning the tournament at Honda Center for the fifth straight year.
Friends defeated Fairmont Private Edgewood of Santa Ana, 4-3 in the championship game in front of close to 1,000 fans in the arena's parking lot, scoring the winning goal with a minute left in sudden death overtime. Goalie Tyler Leech, who stopped 63 of 66 shots in the round robin games, was named the tournament's most valuable player.
Hermosa Drive Elementary edged St. Mary and All Angels of Aliso Viejo in the consolation game. David Magnet beat Saddleback Valley Christian of San Juan Capistrano to finish third in the 20-team tournament for fourth-grade boys and girls.
While that tournament was going on, it was inside Honda Center that Friends Christian captured another tournament, the inaugural i3 Roller Hockey League Championship, defeating Calvary Chapel in the final by a score of 9-1. Cole York (eight points in the final game) was named most valuable player of the tournament for kids in fifth through eighth grade.
