Freeway Face-Off Title on the Line

by Staff Writer / Anaheim Ducks

The joint “Freeway Face-off” promotion between the Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings and broadcast partner Fox Sports WEST and PRIME TICKET will be decided Wednesday night in the final contest between the two teams at Honda Center (7:05 p.m.). The sixth and final meeting between the two teams will determine the season series winner. A $50,000 donation will be made by the losing team to the winning team’s charity of choice after tomorrow’s contest, which can be seen on Fox Sports WEST and heard on KLAA AM 830.

A Ducks win of any kind (regulation, overtime or shootout) will give the season series and “Freeway Face-off” title to Anaheim. The Kings can claim the “Freeway Face-off” title with a regulation win. An overtime or shootout victory by the Kings will leave the season series tied, with the winner of the “Freeway Face-off” then determined by which team has the better final regular season record overall (total standings points).

In five contests vs. Los Angeles this season, Anaheim has posted a 3-2-0 record (six points). Highlights from the 2008-09 season series include two shutout victories by the Ducks on both Nov. 4 and Nov. 16. Goaltender J.S. Giguere recorded his 31st career shutout as defenseman Chris Pronger scored the overtime goal to give the Ducks the 1-0 victory on Nov. 4 at Staples Center, while goaltender Jonas Hiller recorded his first career NHL shutout in a 2-0 Anaheim win at Honda Center on Nov. 16. The Kings have gone 2-2-1 vs. the Ducks this season (five points).

In conjunction with broadcast partner Fox Sports WEST and PRIME TICKET, the “Freeway Face-off” launched during the 2007-08 season, highlighting the now 16-year rivalry between the two clubs. The winner of each season series receives a $50,000 donation to their team foundation (Anaheim Ducks Foundation or Kings Care) from the other club. The Ducks won the inaugural “Freeway Face-off” by earning 12 standings points last year (6-2-0) to the Kings’ six.

Tickets for tomorrow night’s game between the Ducks and Kings at Honda Center are still available and can be purchased by clicking here, or by phone with Ticketmaster at (714) 703-2545. Tickets may also be purchased in person at the Honda Center box office.
