Ducks to Host Street Hockey Tournament forLocal Fourth-Grade Elementary Students this Saturday

by Staff Writer / Anaheim Ducks
The Ducks will host the sixth annual S.C.O.R.E. Street Hockey Shootout presented by Oggi’s for fourth-grade students this Saturday, May 11 from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in the Honda Center parking lot (“Lot 5,” adjacent to the 57 freeway). Approximately 350 children from 23 local schools will compete in the tournament, a culmination of the club’s S.C.O.R.E. (Scholastic Curriculum of Recreation & Education) physical education curriculum. The winning school will receive the S.C.O.R.E. Cup to commemorate the championship, a trophy it will keep until it is awarded to next year’s recipient.

Each school participating in Saturday’s Street Hockey Shootout is a member of the S.C.O.R.E. program, consisting of 27,000 local students representing 250 schools. As part of S.C.O.R.E.’s in-school physical education curriculum, 45 schools and 4,500 children currently play street hockey. The program is funded by the Anaheim Ducks Foundation, which provides a full donation of street hockey equipment, training for physical education instructors and a 10-day curriculum. The Ducks launched the S.C.O.R.E. program in 2005, aimed at in-class and physical education through free educational standards-based programs and incentives for all participating teachers and students.

Saturday’s tournament is free to attend and will include concessions, music and prizes. Young children attending the S.C.O.R.E. Street Hockey Shootout as spectators will also have the opportunity to compete in mini-games throughout the day and Ducks mascot Wild Wing will be on hand to cheer for all participants in Saturday’s festivities. The S.C.O.R.E. Cup is engraved with each winning school and player names. Five-time champion Friends Christian School of Yorba Linda returns to defend its title after defeating Fairmont Private (North Tustin) in last year’s championship game. Oggi’s Pizza and Brewing Company is providing a pizza lunch for all participating players and coaches. In addition, Pepsi and Pop Chips have donated food and beverage products to Saturday’s tournament.

Ducks S.C.O.R.E. offers a three-pronged approach to enrich the education of students: an in-class education program that donates 18,000 sets of school supplies and includes an incentive-based reading program (Reading is the GOAL), a science & math program (First Flight Field Trip), as well as a physical education program that includes the street hockey curriculum and the Captain’s Challenge, aimed at motivating fifth-grade students to pursue better health and fitness.
