The Ducks have reassigned defenseman Sami Vatanen
to the Norfolk Admirals, Anaheim’s primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL).
Vatanen, 22 (6/3/91), has appeared in 39 contests for Anaheim this season, earning 6-8=14 points with 20 penalty minutes (PIM) and a +3 rating. He scored his first goal of the season (third career) on Nov. 2 at Buffalo as part of a 6-3 Ducks win. The 5-10, 183-pound defenseman ranks tied for first among team blueliners in goals (6), second in power-play goals (2), third in points (14) and fourth in shots (59). In 47 career NHL games, Vatanen has earned 8-8=16 points with 20 PIM and a +6 rating.
Vatanen made his NHL debut on Feb. 1, 2013 vs. Minnesota and scored his first career goal on Apr. 17, 2013 vs. Columbus (Bobrovsky). The Jyvaskyla, Finland, native was selected by Anaheim in the fourth round (106th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
Vatanen was reassigned to Norfolk on Nov. 14, 2013 and scored 1-2=3 points with a +1 rating in two games with the Admirals. He has appeared in 64 career AHL games with Norfolk, collecting 10-38=48 points with a +1 rating and 44 PIM.
