Anaheim 1 vs. Pittsburgh 5
Nov. 2, 2016
4-5-2, 10 Standings Points
On the game
We made things way too easy on them. At some points in the game it looked like they were running a power play. It's just a shame. You hope a team like that can bring the best out of you. We didn't have our A-game tonight.
On the turning point
Our first period was good, but they were opportunistic on a couple goals. Our second period was awful. We spent the whole time in our own end. We defended the entire time and didn't make any plays with the puck. A team like that is going to make you look silly when you do stuff like that.
On the game
They're Stanley Cup champions for a reason. They're a really good team. I thought we had a really good first period. We just gave them too many chances. At the end of the day, we loosened up and they made us pay.
On the Penguins' forecheck
We were doing ourselves more harm by not getting pucks out quicker. They have good forecheckers that stay on you and stay relentless. You almost have to get the puck out as soon as you can or else you're going to spend time in your end.
Head Coach Randy Carlyle
On the game
It seemed like we didn't have any energy. It's the second game we've played in our building like that. I thought we had a decent enough first period to get ourselves some respect in the game, but we were still down in the period. They were much quicker and had a lot more energy than we did.
On coming out flat in two consecutive home games
That's what we're banging our heads against the wall over. The answer to it isn't right at the tip of my tongue. I'm sure they don't feel very good about themselves. When you have performances like this when you're a step-and-a-half behind the hockey club you're playing, it hurts.
On returning to the lineup from injury
I felt good out there, it's fun to participate on the scoring sheet too.
On the team's response to giving up a power-play goal
We were playing well. It was 2-0 before they scored that goal. We knew we had the momentum and they caught us with a long shift on the penalty kill and scored. We came back right where we left off after they scored.
On facing shots early in the game
It doesn't matter when the shots come, you have to be ready. That's my job, just to stop the puck, so I don't really worry about when they come. I felt pretty good off the start.
On the win
I think my job was pretty easy tonight. The team played extremely well. I had enough in-tight battles and stuff like that to test my hand in a game situation and it felt really good. I'm pretty happy with how things went.
Head Coach Mike Sullivan
On if he thought this was the most dominant win of the season so far
I thought so, I really liked how we played. I thought we were skating, we were moving the puck, I thought we executed much better coming out of our end zone and we were on the puck all over the rink. When we do that we are hard to play against. I thought our second period was our best, but overall it was probably one of our more complete games this year.
On Letang's impact on the game
He's one of the best defensemen in the league. He helps you get out of your end zone, he joins the rush, he makes plays off the rush so when he's in our lineup we are a much better team at both ends of the rink. I think his offense is evident but I think it flies under the radar how well he defends. He defends extremely well with his stick, his skating and his smarts. He's an elite player.
