“We’re thrilled that the Ducks S.C.O.R.E program has received such a high honor,” said Ducks Director of Fan Development Matt Savant. “Our work to promote literacy for local students is an on-going effort and we’re grateful to Walter Knott for hosting us as we try to reach as many children as possible.”

Reading is the GOAL day at Walter Knott Elementary is themed around promoting literacy and the importance of education. The players alternated reading to kids at the school-wide assembly, then engaged in a question-and-answer session on the stage.

Following the assembly, Ducks staff members read to first, second, third and fourth grade classes. During the children’s lunch periods, several Ducks staff members participated in street hockey games on the school playground.

The California Teacher's Association, a chapter of the National Education Association, is supporting Reading is the GOAL Day by providing Barnes and Noble gift cards as prizes for kids who excel in the Reading is the GOAL program.

The Ducks presented the school with a team signed jersey.

CRA, an affiliate of the International Reading Association, is one of the largest professional organizations in the country. The members of the regional reading councils are a diverse group, representing pre-kindergarten through university level educators. The association is involved in all aspects of literacy, curriculum, and instruction, and is united by a common purpose of promoting literacy for all. The award recognizes individuals and civic or professional organizations for their support, concern, and enthusiasm for the advancement of literacy.

Throughout California, 60 Celebrate Literacy Awards were given by local reading councils this year. From that group, CRA selected the Anaheim Ducks S.C.O.R.E. program to receive the statewide Celebrate Literacy Award because of the high regard given by teachers and students from the schools in Orange, San Diego and Riverside Counties where the programs are implemented. CRA honors the Ducks S.C.O.R.E. program for its success in motivating children to read and for promoting life-long reading. For more information on the Anaheim Ducks S.C.O.R.E. program, please visit
