Anaheim 1 vs. Arizona 2
Sept. 27, 2016
0-1-0, 0 pts.
On the preseason opener
It was just a feeling-out process in terms of how we're going to do things. It was a pretty scrambly game all around. It wasn't too good of a game, but hopefully the more we play, and more we get comfortable, it just gets better.
On the positives from the game
To get our first game, a lot of guys haven't even played a scrimmage of 5-on-5 throughout the summer. This is probably their first taste of real competition. Other than that, we'll just take a few things we did well, but more of the negatives and try to work on them.
On his preseason debut
I felt good, felt comfortable. It was good to get in a game-like situation. There are still a few things I'd like to work on, but overall I felt pretty good. It's nice to get into the game quickly. I thought our team did a pretty good job of keeping them to the outside, and when it was in front of me, they battled for it.
On evaluating his performance
It's hard to tell since it was only half a game. I'm happy with it, but I would've liked that goal back. I played with [Chris] Mueller last year, and he's more of a passer.
Head Coach Randy Carlyle
On his impressions of the game
I just think some young kids got their first taste of NHL hockey. You could tell, in some situations, it was overwhelming from the pressure and the speed Arizona was able to apply. I thought they got better as the game went on. We didn't create enough from an offensive standpoint, but I thought the speed of our hockey club was evident. When we transition the puck, we can skate and get on people.
On using preseason as a learning experience
They didn't have a full veteran lineup either. They had some of their young kids. Their group versus our group, they were probably a little bit older, but that's all. Not by much. It showed in some ways. That's what these exhibition games are. You're trying to give your kids an opportunity to gain some experience. This is a little bit of baptism by fire. They've never played at this level before against bigger, stronger men of that size or quality in a preseason game. It's all a positive experience we hope they take away from it.
On returning to the Honda Center
It's always different. You want to do well against your old team. I thought it was a good job by our team. Regardless of if it is preseason or not, you want to win hockey games. We stuck together and played well in our own end. We had a lot of shots on net and it was good to come out with a win tonight.
On the Coyotes first preseason game
We got the jitters out right away. Yesterday we were slow in the first period. Today we did really good in this first period. It's just getting the legs and the pace back. Even though we played back to back, we were ready to go. It showed tonight that we did have a game under our belt.
On the 2-on-1 that led to his goal
It was a great play by Dahls (Klas Dahlbeck), I don't even know if he got credit for an assist but he made a nice chip to create a 2-on-1. I usually pass so I figured Hack (Matt Hackett) was cheating a little bit, but the defense actually played it pretty well but I got the shot off and it went in.
On getting acclimated to the Arizona locker room
It's been great, it's really young. This is my 9th camp and I know how it goes, but I've never been in a camp where I have been the most experienced guy. Most of my games have been in the AHL but there is a lot of young talent and speed here and now it's all about putting it together with all of the new guys in the organization. Coach Tippett has been great since coming back from the World Cup and I am just trying to show him that I can earn a spot here or be a leader down in the AHL.
