The Ducks announced today the club’s 82-game regular season schedule for the 2009-10 NHL campaign. The club will open its 17th year in the National Hockey League (NHL) on Saturday, Oct. 3 (7:05 p.m.) at Honda Center against the San Jose Sharks.
Anaheim’s 2009-10 regular season schedule includes 82 games in total, 41 at Honda Center and 41 on the road. The Ducks will play six games against Pacific Division opponents (24 games total), four games against each non-divisional Western Conference team (40 games), and 18 contests against Eastern Conference opponents. Anaheim will play each NHL team at least once in 2009-10.
Highlights from the home schedule include a visit by Sidney Crosby and the 2009 Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins on Nov. 3, the return of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Oct. 26, newly acquired Ducks center Saku Koivu’s first appearance against his former team, the Montreal Canadiens on Mar. 7, and an appearance by 2008-09 Vezina Trophy winner Tim Thomas, 2008-09 Norris Trophy winner Zdeno Chara and the Boston Bruins on Jan. 13. The Ducks will play home and road games versus the Penguins, Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning and battle every other Eastern Conference team once. Other Eastern Conference teams to visit Anaheim in 2009-10 include Carolina (Nov. 25), Ottawa (Dec. 6), Buffalo (Jan. 19), and the New York Islanders (Mar. 19). Among Western Conference opponents, Anaheim will host the Los Angeles Kings three times: Dec. 1, Feb. 8 and Apr. 6.
As a result of internal team fan surveys, six Saturday home games have been scheduled for the upcoming season. The club will host five Friday, six Saturday and seven Sunday contests in 2009-10. Anaheim has played only eight previous regular season Saturday home games in club history and never opened on a Saturday at Honda Center. November and March will be the busiest home months of the season, with nine games scheduled in each month at Honda Center. Anaheim’s longest homestands of the season will be two stretches of seven consecutive games slated for Nov. 19-Dec. 1 and Mar. 7-21. The Ducks will also enjoy a five-game homestand at Honda Center from Oct. 14-30. Anaheim will host two afternoon games in 2009-10, including Nov. 27 vs. Chicago (1:05 p.m.) and Dec. 19 vs. Phoenix (1:05 p.m.).
