On Thursday, Nov. 19, members of the Anaheim Ducks and Honda Center staff volunteered packaging food for the upcoming "We Give Thanks" event that will provide a thanksgiving meal and supplemental groceries for an estimated 7,000 families who continue to struggle with food insecurity.
Over 200 volunteers will assemble the holiday meal boxes over the next three days at Second Harvest's distribution facility in Irvine. On Thanksgiving Day, 300 volunteers will place the Thanksgiving meal for four and a box of supplemental, shelf-stable food into each car. Over 1,300 turkeys, 7,000 pies and 13,000 pounds of potatoes, along with 175,000 pounds of boxed food will be distributed on Thanksgiving day.
This will be the 34th year, We Give Thanks, Inc., founded by Anaheim restaurateur Frank Garcia, has provided Thanksgiving meals to OC residents in need. For the last 11 years Garcia has partnered with the Anaheim Ducks to host the "We Give Thanks" annual buffet-style Thanksgiving Day feast at the Honda Center. This year, the risk of COVID-19 nearly forced the cancellation of this event until it was reimagined into a drive thru format at Honda Center with the help of Second Harvest Food Bank. From March to June 2020, Second Harvest hosted 15 weeks of Pop-Up Drive Thru food distributions at Honda Center that allowed for safe, physical distancing between volunteers, staff and residents receiving food, and these practices will be applied to enable a safe and successful event on Thanksgiving Day.
