Ducks 6, Coyotes 2

by Staff Writer / Anaheim Ducks

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Teemu Selanne and Chris Pronger each netted a goal and two assists and Andy McDonald converted his first career penalty shot as the Ducks defeated the Phoenix Coyotes 6-2 on Friday at Honda Center.

The victory runs the Ducks' record to 10-0-4 in their first 14 games, the longest streak to begin an NHL campaign since the 1984 Edmonton Oilers started 12-0-3.

"The last couple of games we hadn't played very well," said Pronger. "We were still getting points and winning some games. But we realized we've got to get better as a team. We certainly made some steps tonight, but we can still play better."

Chris Kunitz got the Anaheim offense going at 17:03 of the first period with his sixth goal of the season. Kunitz knocked home a rebound of a Selanne shot seven seconds into the Ducks' second power play of the game.

In the second period, Anaheim would open up a 5-0 lead.

"I think after the first period we got things going, said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle. "The puck wasn't going our way in the first and we turned the puck over far too many times. Then the power play scored some good goals for us in the second."

Dustin Penner ripped a slap shot past Phoenix netminder Curtis Joseph to give Anaheim a 2-0 lead at 2:07 of the second period. The goal was Penner's fifth of the season.

Selanne gave Anaheim a 3-0 lead on the power play at 8:16 of the second. The veteran right wing fired a slapper past Joseph from the right face off dot for his 455th career tally.

Defenseman Sean O'Donnell put Anaheim up 4-0 at 14:13 of the second period. O'Donnell caught a pass at the point from Selanne and skated the puck all the way to the right face off dot firing a slap shot over the left shoulder of Joseph for his second goal of the year.

At 18:10 of the second period, McDonald was awarded a penalty shot after Joseph tossed his stick in an attempt thwart a scoring attempt. On the penalty shot, McDonald deked to his forehand and beat Joseph blocker side.

After a Patrick Fischer goal at 1:10 of the third period, Anaheim continued their success on the power play. Pronger fired his trademark slap shot from the point past the new Phoenix netminder David LeNeveu at 4:20 of the third period to give the Ducks a 6-1 lead.

Phoenix got one more back at 10:39 as Mike Comrie knocked in a rebound for his fourth goal of the season.

"We did lots of good things out there tonight," said Selanne. "But they didn't play their best, either. But that's what it takes. Power play was good, PK was good, every line was pretty solid. We can always be better, but we've got to be happy with this."

Anaheim finishes this brief three game homestand on Monday against the Pittsburgh Penguins at 7:05 p.m.
