Ducks defenseman Joe DiPenta served as a guest chef at a special fundraising event at the Anaheim White House restaurant on Thursday. Benefitting the Anaheim Boys and Girls Club, Joe and his wife Jessica prepared a family recipe of DiPenta Lasagna and helped raise $17,000 at the event.
"It was a big success," DiPenta said. "We couldn't have asked for a better turnout from the fans and the people that wanted to support the event."
DiPenta's lasagna was served in the alfresco setting of the Anaheim White House garden by Ducks teammates Chris Pronger, George Parros
and Kent Huskins.
"That was huge," DiPenta said. "I was able to be so lucky to have three of my teammates come. I know they're busy in the summertime. When they found out it was for charity and that it was an event I was part of, they were more than happy to come."
All proceeds raised from the event will benefit a nonprofit founded by the restuarant's owner Bruno Serato, who has been friends with DiPenta for several years, to benefit the Anaheim Boys & Girls Club. Each night, 100 hot meals are prepared at the restaurant, picked up by a van purchased by Serato and distributed to the area’s “Motel Kids,” youngsters of Orange County’s working poor who reside in low-cost motels. The program is called Caterina’s Club in honor of Serato’s mother, Caterina Lunardi. Thanks to this program, thousands of the region’s most impoverished youngsters do not go to bed hungry at night.
"He’s done a lot of stuff for charity and is a very generous man," Dipenta said of Serato. "I’d been bragging about how good my dad’s lasagna was for a couple of years, but I had never been able to get the time to cook it for him. This is the first summer that I’ve been here in Anaheim
and I finally had the time to prepare it for him. We got the idea over dinner one night that we should do a charity event to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club."
