ANAHEIM DUCKS TAKE PART IN READING
IS THE GOAL DAY AT LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL THIS THURSDAY
Defenseman Sean O'Donnell, General Manager Brian Burke, TV Play-by-Play Voice John Ahlers and Ducks Staff Members Will Participate in Mid-Year Celebration of the Program
ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the club will participate in a mid-year celebration of the Reading is the Goal program this Thursday, Feb. 1 at Sierra Vista Elementary School in Placentia beginning at 11:15 a.m. Ducks defenseman Sean O'Donnell, General Manager Brian Burke, Ducks broadcaster John Ahlers and members of the Ducks staff will lend support to the students in achieving their goal of reading 1 million pages by the end of the school year.
"We're honored to be a part of this event," said Anaheim Ducks Executive Vice President/General Manager Brian Burke. "This is a great program that teaches children the importance of reading at a young age."
The Ducks have worked extensively with Sierra Vista in creating a special day of events that celebrate the students' progress thus far and motivates them to reach their goal. The day will begin with more than 15 Ducks staff members, including Burke, visiting individual classrooms, where they will each provide students with a brief overview of their profession. Each Ducks employee will then read a book of their choice to the class. When lunch-time and recess begin at noon, the children will have the opportunity to participate in street hockey games.
Following recess, more than 500 students will convene for a teamwork assembly led by John Ahlers. Sean O'Donnell will also speak to the students, encouraging them to reach their goal of 1 million pages, reflecting on his experiences in hockey as parallels. O'Donnell will then present the school with a framed, team-signed Ducks jersey for their efforts.
