ANAHEIM, Calif. – Teemu Selanne scored his 40th goal of the season at 10:56 of the third period to break a 3-3 tie and lead the Ducks over the Calgary Flames 4-3 in Anaheim’s final regular season game on Monday night.
The contest featured 102 penalty minutes including 36 minor penalties.
Anaheim secured the sixth seed in the Western Conference playoffs earlier in the evening when Edmonton defeated the Colorado Avalanche, 4-2. The Ducks travel to Calgary to face the Flames this weekend to begin the conference quarterfinals.
Corey Perry (13, R. Niedermayer, Getzlaf) got the Ducks on the board first at 14:59 of the first period with a power play goal. The rookie right wing skated out of the corner and fired wrist shot past Flames starting netminder Brian Boucher for his 13th goal of the season.
In the waning seconds of the first period, Chris Kunitz (19, Getzlaf, McDonald) gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead with Anaheim on the two-man advantage.
The Flames’ Byron Ritchie (4, Unassisted) cut the Ducks lead in half to 2-1 at 6:47 of the second period. Ritchie stole the puck from Ducks goaltender JS Giguere behind the Anaheim net and wrapped around and in for his fourth goal of the year.
Anaheim regained the two-goal advantage at 10:44 of the second period when Andy McDonald (34, Kunitz, O’Donnell) stickhandled around Boucher to give Anaheim a 3-1 lead. McDonald, who had never tallied more than 10 goals in a season, got his 35th of the year on the play.
Jerome Iginla (35, Hamrlik, Phaneuf) scored a power play goal at 16:57 of the second period and Daymond Langkow (25, Iginla) tallied his 25th of the year at 3:36 of the third to tie it.
Selanne got his 40th goal for the sixth time in his career at 10:56 of the third to break the tie and lift Anaheim to the 4-3 Fan Appreciation Night victory.
